Happy Halloween!

It's that time of year again - jack-o-lanterns, pumpkin spice, skeletons rattling - it's Halloween! And even better than candy corn and jump scares is reading spooky stories to get yourself in the mood for this scareful time of year! We at CHB love Halloween (who doesn't?), and if you're looking to curl up with a flashlight and a book that will send a thrill up your spine, we have a few suggestions:

Atlas Obscura

Whether you are an actual traveler or one of the armchair variety, Atlas Obscura is a must read! Atlas Obscura is a compendium of over 700 of the most interesting and curious places around the globe. From the Questionable Medical Device Collection in St. Paul, MN to the Baby Jumping Festival in Spain – this book has everything you need to plan an epic (and epically weird) bucket list.

Murder in the Bayou

Small town corruption, the intersection of race and class, and the hidden world of trafficking converge in this journalistic expose of the Jeff Davis 8. Between the years of 2005 and 2009 the bodies of eight women were discovered around Jennings, LA. Ethan Brown suggests that these women were not murdered by a single serial killer but where a small part of a large ring of crime that seems wholly unimaginable in a town of only 10,000 people. This book has been very polarizing and a lot of controversy has sprung up around it – definitely one to be read and discussed.

My Sunshine Away

In the summer of 1989, a Baton Rouge neighborhood best known for cookouts on sweltering summer afternoons, cauldrons of spicy crawfish, and passionate football fandom is rocked by a violent crime when fifteen-year-old Lindy Simpson free spirit, track star, and belle of the block is attacked late one evening near her home. As the dark side of this idyllic stretch of Southern suburbia is revealed, the close-knit neighborhood is irreversibly transformed.
