The CHB Read & Review Club is for educators and students who enjoy reading and would like to share the joy of reading with others through reviewing and recommending books. As a bookshop, we often receive special review copies of books in advance of their release dates so that we can review them. However, since we can only read so many books and we value the thoughts and opinions of other readers, CHB is recruiting educators and students to read and review advance reader copies (or arcs) of books that we receive, and we'll post their reviews on the Cavalier House Books website via the Read & Review Club Blog!
Here's how it works:
- Sign up for the R&R Club
- For Students: Fill out the permission form (click the image below to download a copy) and bring it to the shop. Your parent or guardian must sign the permission form so that you can pick up your first book!
- For Educators: Fill out the educators sign up for (click the image below to download a copy) and bring it to the shop. You must use your educator email in order to participate.
- You'll have the option of choosing a book from our selection of advanced reader copies!
- Take your book home and start reading!
- When you've finished reading, write a review of your book.
- Email or deliver your typed review to CHB in order to receive your next book!
Here is some helpful information:
HOW TO WRITE A GOOD REVIEW
A good review should tell a little about the plot of a book without spoiling it for the reader. Include the title of the book as well as the author's first and last name. Reviews should also include the reviewer's opinion of the book as well as a suggestion for who might enjoy such a book. If you really enjoyed the book, bring that excitement and enjoyment into your review! Try to get other readers excited about the book too! Explain why you liked or didn't like a book rather than just stating that you did or didn't like it. Was it well-written? Was it a book you couldn't put down? Were the characters interesting and well-developed? Try to give specific reasons for your opinions. After all, the point of a review is to tell others about the book! If you'd like to see some example reviews, read through some of our reviews on the CHB Picks page.
Reviews are an important way of spreading the word about books we enjoy. We require submitted reviews from students to be at least 200 words and typed. We would like reviews by educators to be a bit longer at about 300-400 words. Reviews must be delivered digitally via email, flash drive, disk, etc. You may only pick up your next arc once you've submitted a review according to these guidelines. Reviews will be posted on the Cavalier House Books website via the Read & Review Club Blog. For students, we include the student's first name, last initial, and age. For educators, we use the educator's first and last name and school.
Being part of the CHB R&R Club is a great opportunity for students to practice critical reading and writing skills in a fun and enjoyable manner. Unlike school required reading, you get to choose the books you read from our selection of advanced reader copies. Other benefits to joining the R&R Club include the priveledge of reading books before their release date as well as the opportunity to share your excitement and passion about books with other readers. This experience is one that would look great on a college or job application, since being able to read and write critically is an excellent and valuable skill set to have. And of course the biggest perk it that you'll get to read awesome books!
There are benefits for educators as well! You can have access to free advanced copies of awesome books that you can review and recommend to your students. You won't just have access to our kids and young adult books; you can also choose from the arcs of adult books that we receive as well! The R&R Club is also a chance for educators to suggest books for us to stock in store and at book fairs. We value your opinions of these upcoming titles! And once you've finished with your arc, you get to keep it for your home or classroom library!
Ready to sign up? Just stop by the shop (and students, don't forget to bring a parent or guardian along!), and we'll get you set up as a member of the R&R Club! If you have any questions or concerns, email Victoria at email@example.com or Michelle at firstname.lastname@example.org. Happy reading and reviewing!
