Harry Potter is my favorite series of all time, hands down, and I've been reading it since I was eight years old.  It's a rich, wonderful story, one I find myself reading over and over, each time learning and experiencing something new.  It's the sort of series that anyone can read and enjoy, and the detailed world Rowling provides fires the imagination.  The lessons of friendship, bravery, the importance of choice, and doing the right thing over the easy thing can resonate with people of every age.

Reading Fangirl was a unique experience, because it was like reading my own life in someone else’s words. Rainbow Rowell beautifully captures what it is like to grow up loving something so completely only to be thrown into adulthood and not know how to fit this love into your new life. For me, it was Harry Potter.  For Cath, it’s the Simon Snow series, which takes the place of Harry Potter in the story. Cath writes Simon Snow fanfiction, she wears Simon Snow tshirts, and she hangs Simon Snow posters around her room. Simon Snow is her life. But when she starts college, she doesn’t know where Simon Snow is supposed to fit into this new concept of “adulthood” she’s being forced to adopt. Can Cath grow up and still keep Simon in her life? The book is a fantastic and accurate look at fandom, thus I hold it very close to my heart. I think that anyone who is a fan of something needs to read Fangirl, because there’s nothing like having a book understand you like you never thought anyone would.

Eleanor and Park is a quiet story of the difficulties and beauties of life and love. Eleanor is a shy, self-conscious girl living in an unhappy household. When she meets quirky, music and comic-loving Park, the two form an unbreakable bond in the face of bullying and self-doubt. It’s a lovely story, one that affects you without you even realizing it. It’s the kind that leaves you wide-eyed and more aware of the wonders of life when you finish.

Jasper Fforde's Shades of Grey is a brilliant, witty novel, filled to bursting with adventure, humor, and creativity.

In Chromatacia, people can only see one color, and their society, the Colortocracy, is based entirely on color perception; in other words, your place in society is determined by what color you can see.  The story follows Eddie Russet, a Red, as he tries to maneuver his way up the social ladder by marrying into a high-class Purple family.  Then he meets Jane, a low-class Grey who shows him that their world is not everything he believed, and the society has secrets that the higher-ups will do anything to keep hidden.

The Night Circus Cover Image

ISBN: 9780307744432
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Anchor Books - July 3rd, 2012

I first read The Night Circus in my freshman year of college.  I think this might be the most beautiful book I've ever read.  I don't necessarily mean story-wise, although the story most definitely is beautiful.  I think the words of this book, the descriptions, the way that Erin Morgenstern makes you see, hear, feel, smell, taste the Circus...it's absolutely amazing.  You don't just read this book, you experience it.

Le Cirque des Rêves, or The Circus of Dreams, is only open at night, and it is a lovely, mysterious place where the magic of dreams become reality.  The circus serves as the stage for a magical competition between two magicians, Celia and Marco, each trying to prove themselves more skilled than the other.  Despite this fierce duel, the two fall in love, not knowing that only one of them can finish the competition.

Morgenstern weaves a beautiful story filled with rich, imaginative descriptions that make you feel as though you yourself are experiencing the magic of the Night Circus.

The Bone Season Cover Image
$24.00
ISBN: 9781620401392

Published: Bloomsbury USA - August 20th, 2013

The Bone Season was one of those books that I could hardly stand to put down, even for a second. It drew me into the world of clairvoyants, and I didn't want it to let me go!

The Bone Season is the first in a seven book series, and it follows Paige Mahoney, a voyant working in an underworld crime syndicate in Scion London, where clairvoyance is illegal and persecuted. Paige is a dreamwalker, and she has the power to penetrate the minds of other voyants. She uses this power to recruit powerful voyants for her sector's crime lord. But when she's captured and sent to a camp run by otherworldly creatures, Paige must discover the truth about clairvoyancy as well as her own powers, because the world is much more dangerous than she ever dreamed.

If the first book is any indication, the rest of the series promises to be an excellent continuation of a wonderful story.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is Lewis Carroll's classic tale of little Alice as she falls through the rabbit hole into the fabled Wonderland.  With witty humor and a sprinkling of the nonsensical, this book and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass, remain my absolute favorite classic stories.

Master storyteller Neil Gaiman crafts a magnificent tale of America as the place where old-world religion goes to die. When immigrants travel to America, they bring their gods from the old world with them. What happens when these gods, far from home, are left abandoned over time? The gods of old must battle the gods of modern times (such as television and technology) in order to stop themselves from going extinct. Thrown into this epic battle is Shadow, an unassuming ex-convict recruited by the mysterious Mr. Wednesday to be his bodyguard and driver.

American Gods is a grandiose story. Gaiman shows off his greatness and proves himself a brilliant and superior author with this book.

Published: Back Bay Books - April 13th, 2010

The Host is Stephenie Meyer's lesser-known novel about alien invaders who not only invade our planet but take over our minds and bodies as well.  The difference between this book and other alien invasion-type books is that this one is from the point of view of one of the alien "souls" who has taken over Earth.  Wanderer the "soul" is implanted into a rebel young woman's body in order to reveal the location of other rebel humans still surviving on the conquered Earth.  But the body's original owner, Melanie, still lives inside Wanderer's head, protecting her memories and thinking her own thoughts.  What will happen when Wanderer, led by Melanie's memories, finds herself starting to care for the humans that Melanie loves?

Stephenie Meyer calls her book "science fiction for people who don't like science fiction," and I have to say that I agree!  It's a fantastic story that anyone, fan of Twilight or not, should read!

I'd been hearing about this series for several years before I finally picked them up to read myself.  I finished all three books in two days.  They were so addicting that I couldn't bear to put them down until I reached the end!

Thomas wakes up one day, not knowing anything about his past or who or where he is.  He finds himself in a giant enclosure with several other boys who call his new location the Glade.  Surrounding the Glade is a giant maze filled with horrid creatures that come out at night when the openings around the Glade close.  None of the boys knows anything about their pasts either, but they do know that every month, they get a new boy.  This month, Thomas is that boy.  However, the next day, they wake up to find a girl has been delivered--a first.  She bears a message for the boys and seems to have some strange connection with Thomas.  Soon, strange and dangerous things start happening in the Maze, and Thomas could be more important than he realized.

This book is an excellent read for fans of The Hunger Games!

Death Be Not Proud is the memoir of Johnny Gunther, who died of a brain tumor when he was only seventeen years old.  Johnny's story is incredibly inspiring because of his perseverence and refusal to give in to his illness.  He was an amazingly intelligent boy with a passion for learning, especially science.  The book was written by his father, and it's a fantastic read.  It certainly makes you think about life and the way you spend your time.

Beth Revis’ Across the Universe trilogy is an epic science fiction adventure.  The book follows Amy, a girl cryogenically frozen aboard the starship Godspeed for centuries of travel to a new planet, and Elder, the young leader-in-training of Godspeed. Someone is murdering the cryogenically frozen scientists aboard Godspeed, and in the process, Amy is woken up a century too early. Together, Amy and Elder must stop the murderer and uncover the dark secrets of Godspeed, against the wishes of Eldest, the ship’s threatening and corrupt leader.
The first book in the trilogy is excellent, and Revis only improves with each book.

Constable & Toop Cover Image
$17.95
ISBN: 9781419707827
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Amulet Books - October 8th, 2013

I decided to read Constable and Toop purely because the jacket description was witty and full of puns, and I never regretted that decision for an instant. Constable and Toop is a hilariously thoughtful adventure through the bureaucratic and ghostly afterlife. Ghosts are disappearing in London. Houses infected with the Black Rot are imprisoning ghosts. The Ghost Bureau has to do something about these occurrences, and they send shy, uncertain Mr. Lapsewood to investigate, resulting in awkward ghostly hilarity.

Filled with quirky characters and amusing witticisms, Constable and Toop is a delightful read for middle graders and adults alike.

Published: Washington Square Press - March 18th, 2014

Ronlyn Domingue’s The Mapmaker’s War is a one-of-a-kind book.  It follows a young woman named Aoife who is allowed to become a mapmaker for her kingdom, traveling far from home to strange lands. Aoife discovers a peaceful and wealthy community where all people live as equals.  When the kingdom finds out about this, they target the community as a threat, and war breaks out. Aoife, imprisoned then exiled for her opposition to the war, must find her way to a happier life where she can be herself while coming to terms with everything she’s left behind.
The book is written entirely in second person from the point of view of an older, wiser Aoife writing to her younger self. It’s a fantastic and beautifully written tale, the first in a trilogy. Ronlyn Domingue sure knows how to craft a story.

Art Spiegelman’s Maus is the first graphic novel I’ve ever read, and it completely convinced me that graphic novels are an underappreciated literary art. Maus chronicles Spiegelman’s father’s experiences in the Holocaust during WWII, along with Art’s own struggles to do the story justice and mend his relationship with his father. Spiegelman brilliantly captures the terror and injustice of the Holocaust as well as the individuality and courage of those subject to its horrors.  Visually stunning and narratively captivating, Maus is a brilliant and emotional look at the Holocaust and its effects on his family.

Scott Westerfeld's dual story of Darcy Patel, a debut young adult author attemtping to make it in the New York publishing scene, and her book's protagonist, Lizzie, a terrorist-surviving teen who thinks her way into the afterworld, the realm between the living and the dead, is fantastic for fans of YA (especially Westerfeld's other works), especially those interested in writing or the publishing industry. The book is really two novels in one. Alternating chapters tell Darcy's story of life, love, and rewrites in the writer's world of NYC alongside the entirety of her finished novel, Afterworlds. Both stories are utterly captivating, and Scott Westerfeld has once again proven his writing chops. You'll be left not only wishing for a sequel but wishing the other novels and authors mentioned in the book actually exist.

The Midnighters trilogy is another great one from Uglies author Scott Westerfeld.  Everyone knows there are only 24 hours in a day, right?  Wrong!  There is a secret hour at midnight where the entire world freezes except for those born exactly at midnight.  Jessica Day discovers this secret hour soon after she moves to Bixby, Oklahoma, as well as the few other "midnighters" who live and move around at this time.  In this dark hour, horrid creatures exist that, for some reason, take a particularly sinister interest in Jessica.
