A More Diverse Fantasy World

Fantasy and Science Fiction have been the top of my reading lists since I was a teen. I love sneaking off into magical realms and venturing out among the far-off stars. Robots, wizards, spaceships, and mythical beasts; I’ll take them all in the stories I read. These days, it’s the voices of some supremely talented black authors who’ve captured my imagination with every page I turn. Among them, N.K. Jemisin, Marlon James, Tomi Adeyemi, and Nnedi Okorafor.

Sophie is Awed by N.K. Jemisin

For Black History Month, I wanted to speak about and praise one of my favorite authors of all time--N. K. Jemisin. In 2016 she became the first black author to win a Hugo award for her book, The Fifth Season--a book I consider a masterpiece. She then repeated that the following year with The Obelisk Gate. She’s brave, bold and outspoken when it comes to issues of race. You will never see her back down. And for this, I admire her greatly.
