Just Stephen King coming at ya to wish you a happy Wednesday!
I'm currently working by way through King's backlist in publication order and it is quite literally all I want to talk about!
Anyone else wanna get in on this?
Here are a few thoughts on what I've read so far.
Carrie, King's first book, was published in 1974. I read a ton of King's novels as a teenager, but always stayed away from this one because I happened upon the film version at a sleepover in late elementary school and have been terrified of the story ever since. To this day I find an overabundance of religious iconography to be unsettling. The current edition of the novel has a great forward from King about writing the story and two young women from his past that inspired it.
The next year came 'Salem's Lot. I love a good vampire story, but this is not my favorite of King's novels. I was genuinely creeped out while reading though! King is so great at building an unsettling atmosphere.
In 1977 King published Rage; after the mass shooting at Columbine, he let the book go out of print. This is a very dark book about a teenager holding his schoolmates hostage. There is a casualness to the cruelty in this novel that I found very uncomfortable. Definitely not one I will revisit.
That same year, King published The Shining. My favorite of his novels and my third time reading it (looks like I'm rereading this one every ten years). The specter of alcoholism and an inability to cope with life are the true horrors of this novel. One of the greatest novels of all time, no joke.
Night Shift, King's first collection of short stories, came along in 1978. There are a few forgettable stories in here, but a ton of classics as well (and plenty that have been turned into films). My favorite though is "The Mangler" - that weird little story of a demon possessed industrial folding machine is a true gem (look, I know how insane that sounds, but just read this masterpiece!).
1978 brought us The Stand as well. This novel gets better every time I read it. I spent a lot of time thinking about King's views on morality and the politics of fear while reading this (and maybe too much time trying to get other people to listen to me talk about these things as well). I was hit hard by the sheer brilliance of King's writing ability as he traced the plague in its early days. I was bowled over by the "no great loss" section (another look at moral issues here). All in all, I love this novel fiercely.
And that's it. I'll get to 1979's The Long Walk soon. Eventually, I'll read The Gunslinger for the fifth time and finally finishing The Dark Tower series. I'll get to It at some point, another novel I have always been too creeped out by to pick up. I still have so many great books to look forward to. I anticipate this taking years, but I'm looking forward to every one of them.
