A Read & Review Club Review: Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

The CHB Read & Review Club is for educators and students who enjoy reading and would like to share the joy of reading with others through reviewing and recommending books. As a bookshop, we often receive special review copies of books in advance of their release dates so that we can review them. However, since we can only read so many books and we value the thoughts and opinions of other readers, CHB is recruiting educators and students to read and review advance reader copies (or arcs) of books that we receive, and we'll post their reviews on the Cavalier House Books website via the Read & Review Club Blog!

Elise M. (13) is a Read & Review Club member, and she has written a review of the new book by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, the first book in a fascinating new series, Illuminae! Check out what she has to say about the book:

I could not put this book down. I think it’s probably best going into this book not knowing much about it so it can pleasantly surprise you, like it did with me. Kady thought that breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she'd have to do that day. That afternoon her home planet was invaded. The year is 2575. Kady and Ezra are of the few survivors left from their home planet, Kerenza. While Kady is aboard the ship, Hypatia, Ezra is aboard the ship, Alexander. Kady, never the one to be kept in the dark, hacks the computer system aboard the ship using her advanced computer skills to discover secrets that can't be buried. Soon finding out that the warship that destroyed their home world is following them, Ezra is conscripted into the army upon the Alexander. But to Kady's dismay, her hacking leads her to find that the warship coming for them is not their biggest worry. A terrible plague has broken out and mutating with horrifying results. As Kady digs deeper and deeper she comes to the realize that the only person she can trust to help bring the truth to light is the one person she swore to herself that she would never speak to again: her ex-boyfriend, Ezra.

I honestly loved this book so much. It has a little bit of everything in it. Action. Romance. Thriller. Outer Space. To tell the truth I am honestly not a big space fan but I found this book amazing. I honestly believe that anyone can get into it. Plus the book is told in such a unique way. Whereas every book I have ever read is told in simple text with a few charts and illustrations, this book is completely different. The story is told through emails, IMs, military files, interviews, medical reports, and so many more beautiful ways of writing I have never seen before. It has little "debriefing" notes to as where the source came from. Also this book had me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. It is 600 pages long and I read it in two days. That is how much I love this book. One of the first things you fall in love with are the characters. Both are just so different and you fall in love with their personalities so easily.  And the writing is so easy to get into. You climb in and live with the characters and you don't notice it until you put the book down and come back to reality on Earth. I think this story is so unique and beautiful and will leave fans craving more when they finish. I really do believe that this book will hit number 1 in no time flat. This book is definitely in my favorite top five!

Thanks to Elsie for her review!
