CHB's Read & Review Club

The CHB Read & Review Club is for teens 13-18 years of age who enjoy reading and would like to share the joy of reading with others through reviewing and recommending books. As a bookshop, we receive special review copies of books in advance of their release dates in order to review them. However, since we can only read so many books and we value the thoughts and opinions of other readers, CHB is recruiting teens to read and review advance reader copies (or ARCs) of books that we receive. These reviews will be shared through the CHB website, newsletter, and social media. Reviews are also shared with our publishing partners.

Here's how it works:

  1. Sign up for the R&R Club
    1. For teens: Fill out all participation forms (click the image below to download a copies of these forms) and bring them to the shop. Your parent or guardian must sign the permission form so that you can pick up your first book!
  2. Attend a R&R Book Club meeting where you’ll hear all about upcoming books through a special presentation.
  3. Choose one of the books presented to take home to read and review.
  4. When you've finished reading, write a review of your book.
  5. Email your typed review to Katherine@cavalierhousebooks.com in order to receive your next book at our next meeting.

*Participation in monthly meetings and writing reviews is a must to be a part of our R&R Club. R&R Club is about creating early buzz for new books and we can’t do that without talking about them! We understand that your time is limited and some meetings will be missed but we would greatly appreciate you checking in to let us know if you will not be able to make it.

Here is some helpful information:

HOW TO WRITE A GOOD REVIEW

A good review should tell a little about the plot of a book without spoiling it for the reader. Include the title of the book as well as the author's first and last name. Reviews should also include the reviewer's opinion of the book as well as a suggestion for who might enjoy such a book. If you really enjoyed the book, bring that excitement and enjoyment into your review! Try to get other readers excited about the book too! Explain why you liked or didn't like a book rather than just stating that you did or didn't like it. Was it well-written? Was it a book you couldn't put down? Were the characters interesting and well-developed? Try to give specific reasons for your opinions. After all, the point of a review is to tell others about the book!

REVIEW REQUIREMENTS

Reviews are an important way of spreading the word about books we enjoy. We require submitted reviews to be at least 200 words and typed. Reviews must be delivered digitally via email to Katherine@cavalierhousebooks.com. You may only pick up your next arc once you've submitted a review according to these guidelines. Reviews will be posted on the Cavalier House Books website via the Read & Review Club Blog. R&R Club member reviews will be identified by first name, last initial, and age.

Being part of the CHB R&R Club is a great opportunity to practice critical reading and writing skills in a fun and enjoyable manner. Unlike school required reading, you get to choose the books you read from our selection of ARCs. Other benefits to joining the R&R Club include the priveledge of reading books before their release date as well as the opportunity to share your excitement and passion about books with other readers. This experience is one that would look great on a college or job application, since being able to read and write critically is an excellent and valuable skill set to have. And of course the biggest perk it that you'll get to read awesome books!

Ready to sign up? Just stop by the shop (don't forget to bring a parent or guardian along!), and we'll get you set up as a member of the R&R Club! If you have any questions or concerns, email Katherine at Katherine@cavalierhousebooks.com or Michelle at michelle@cavalierhousebooks.com. Happy reading and reviewing!
